A curly hair routine for men that takes five minutes

Most curly hair advice assumes long hair and a two-hour Sunday. If you have a short cut, a grow-out or a fade with curls on top, this one is for you.

The short version

  • Stop washing with 2-in-1 or body wash. Sulfate-heavy cleansers strip curls and cause the frizz.
  • Conditioner every wash, even if your hair is short.
  • Product goes on soaking wet hair — not towel-dried. This is the biggest single fix.
  • Don’t touch it while it dries. Then scrunch out the crunch.

Coil started because of a gap: men with curly hair get almost no useful advice. Everything online assumes waist-length hair and a dozen products. You need four things and five minutes.

Not sure what’s in your current bottles? Here’s what to avoid, or scan the label in Coil and it’ll flag them.

Wash day (2–3 times a week)

  1. Shampoo the scalp only. Massage with your fingertips. Let the suds run through the lengths — that’s enough.
  2. Condition everything. Leave it in for a minute while you do the rest of your shower. Rake through with fingers.
  3. Rinse, but don’t towel. Get out with hair dripping.
  4. Leave-in, then gel. A pea-to-nickel amount of each for short hair. Rub between palms, then scrunch upward.
  5. Hands off. Air dry, or diffuse on low. When fully dry, scrunch to break the gel cast.

Non-wash days (90 seconds)

Wet your hands, scrunch water into the hair to wake the curls up, add a tiny bit of leave-in where it’s frizzy, and leave it alone. That’s a refresh.

Five mistakes we see constantly

  • Towel rubbing. Roughs up the cuticle. Squeeze with a T-shirt instead.
  • Brushing dry curls. Instant poof. Detangle only when wet and conditioned.
  • Matte clay or pomade on curls. Most contain waxes that build up and flatten the pattern.
  • Going too long between cuts. Short curly cuts lose shape fast. Most men need a trim every 4–8 weeks. More here.
  • Giving up after a week. Hair coming off sulfates often needs a few weeks to settle. Track it rather than judging day three.
Fade on the sides, curls on top?Treat only the top as “curly hair”. The routine is the same, just a smaller amount of product. In Coil, set your trim rhythm to every two or four weeks and it will remind you before the fade grows out.

How to know it’s working

Here’s the honest part: you won’t know from one day. Curls vary with humidity, sleep and how much you touched them. The only way to see the trend is to log it. That’s what Coil’s 20-second check-in is for — tick what you did, rate your hair, and after a couple of weeks you’ll see which wash day and which product actually moved your curl score.

Questions people ask

How often should men wash curly hair?

Two to three times a week works for most men with curls. If you work out daily, rinse with water and condition on the days in between rather than shampooing.

Is gel bad for curly hair?

No — a good alcohol-free gel is one of the best things for curly hair. It holds the curl shape while it dries. Scrunch it out once dry so it doesn’t feel crunchy.

Can men use the curly girl method?

Yes. The method has nothing to do with gender. The core ideas — gentle cleansers, lots of conditioner, no harsh brushing — work on any curly hair.
