How often should you wash curly hair? A schedule by curl type and scalp

There’s no single right answer, but there is a right answer for you — and it’s probably less often than you wash now.

The short version

  • Wavy: 2–4 times a week. Curly: 2–3 times. Coily: once a week to every 10 days.
  • Your scalp is the tiebreaker. Oily scalps need more washing; dry ones need less.
  • Rinsing and conditioning isn’t “washing” — you can do that on workout days.
  • Pick a rhythm and stick to it for three weeks before judging it.

Curly hair is drier than straight hair because natural scalp oil (sebum) struggles to travel down a spiral. The tighter the curl, the less oil reaches the ends. That’s why the tighter your pattern, the less often you generally need to shampoo.

A starting schedule

HairWash with shampooIn between
Wavy (2A–2C)2–4× a weekLight refresh with water or mist
Curly (3A–3C)2–3× a weekRefresh with water + a little leave-in
Coily (4A–4C)Every 7–10 daysMoisturise and seal; protective style

Then adjust for your scalp

  • Oily within a day or two: wash more often, focus shampoo on the roots, and use a gentle clarifying wash every couple of weeks.
  • Dry or flaky: wash less, use a gentle shampoo, and consider oiling the scalp between washes. If flakes are greasy and yellowish, that’s more likely dandruff — here’s how to tell.
  • Itchy or sensitive: fragrance-free products and a thorough rinse.
  • Work out daily: rinse with water and condition on gym days; shampoo on your normal schedule.

Coil sets your wash cycle from this answer — twice a week means a wash day roughly every four days.

Co-wash, low-poo, or shampoo?

  • Co-wash (cleansing conditioner): the gentlest. Great for dry, coily or high-porosity hair. Can build up on fine or low-porosity hair.
  • Low-poo (sulfate-free shampoo): the middle ground most curly people land on.
  • Clarifying shampoo: once every 2–4 weeks if you use gels, butters or hard water. Resets build-up.

Don’t judge a schedule in a week

When people cut back on washing, the scalp often feels oilier for a week or two before settling. Give any new rhythm three weeks. The easiest way to be fair to it is to log how your hair felt each day rather than relying on memory.

Coil does that bookkeeping for you. It tracks your wash days from your check-ins, puts the next one in your routine, and nudges you when you’re overdue — then shows you whether your curl score is better on day one, day two or day three of the cycle.

Questions people ask

Is it bad to wash curly hair every day?

Daily shampooing usually dries curly hair out. If you need to clean daily (oily scalp, sport), use a very gentle cleanser or just rinse and condition most days.

Can I just rinse curly hair with water?

Yes. A water rinse and conditioner between shampoos is a good way to refresh, especially after exercise.

How do I know if I’m washing too little?

An itchy scalp, flakes that build up, an odour, or curls that look flat and coated are all signs to wash more often or clarify.
