How often should you trim curly hair? A schedule for every length

A fade and a waist-length spiral set obviously don’t share a trim schedule. Here’s what does make sense.

The short version

  • Short structured cuts: every 2–6 weeks. Mid-length curls: every 8 weeks. Growing long: every 12 weeks.
  • Hair grows roughly half an inch (about 1.25 cm) a month on average.
  • Split ends travel up the strand. Trimming early saves length later.
  • Watch for: tangles at the ends, see-through ends, curls that won’t clump at the bottom.

Average scalp hair grows around half an inch a month — about six inches a year — although it varies by person. So on an 8-week schedule you grow about an inch between cuts; a quarter-inch trim still leaves you three-quarters of an inch ahead.

Signs you’re overdue

  • Ends tangle and knot even after conditioning.
  • The last inch looks thin, see-through or a different texture.
  • Curls clump at the top but the ends stay frizzy and straight-ish.
  • Your cut has lost its shape — a triangle instead of a round.

Wet cut or dry cut?

Curly hair shrinks as it dries — sometimes by half its length or more for tight coils — so a cut done stretched and wet can end up much shorter than planned. Many curly specialists cut dry, curl by curl, so they can see where each curl actually sits. If your barber or stylist cuts wet, ask them to leave extra length.

Never lose track of the last cut

Most people trim “when I remember”, which usually means two or three months late. Coil asks when you last had a cut and how often you’d like one — from every week to every 12 weeks, or “only when it needs it” — then pencils in the next date, adds it to your routine as it gets close, and reminds you before it creeps up on you.

Questions people ask

Do trims make curly hair grow faster?

No. Hair grows from the scalp, not the ends. Trims help you keep length by removing split ends before they travel and cause breakage.

How much should I trim off curly hair?

For a maintenance trim, a quarter to half an inch is usually enough. Damaged ends may need more.

Can I trim my own curly hair?

Small dustings, yes — trim individual curls dry, just above the damage. For shape, a stylist or barber who knows curls is worth it.
