How to stop frizzy curly hair: the 7 causes, ranked by how often they’re the problem

Frizz isn’t a hair type. It’s a symptom — and it almost always traces back to one of seven things.

The short version

  • Frizz happens when the cuticle is raised and strands pull moisture from the air and separate from their curl clump.
  • The top causes are dryness, friction (towels, pillows, hands) and harsh cleansers.
  • Apply product to soaking-wet hair and don’t touch it while it dries — that alone fixes most frizz.
  • A gel cast, scrunched out once dry, is the closest thing to a frizz shield.

Curly hair frizzes more easily than straight hair for a mechanical reason: every bend in a curl is a spot where the cuticle lifts slightly. A raised cuticle grabs water from humid air, the strand swells unevenly, and it breaks away from the clump it was in. That’s frizz.

Here are the causes, roughly in the order we find them when people describe their routine.

1. Your hair is thirsty

Dry hair pulls moisture from wherever it can, including the air. Fix: conditioner every wash, a leave-in, and a deep condition once a week if you’re high porosity. See high porosity routine.

2. Friction

Rubbing with a terry towel, cotton pillowcases, running hands through it during the day. Fix: squeeze with a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel, sleep on satin or in a bonnet, and keep your hands out of it.

3. A harsh cleanser

Strong sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate remove oils your curls need. There’s also chemistry: a review in the International Journal of Trichology notes that shampoos with a high (alkaline) pH increase the negative electrical charge on the hair surface, which increases friction between fibres and leads to frizz. Fix: a sulfate-free or gentle shampoo, or a co-wash.

4. Product on hair that’s already half-dry

If you towel off before applying product, curls have already started to separate and frizz. Fix: apply leave-in and styler with hair dripping. It feels wrong. It works.

5. Touching it while it dries

Every touch breaks clumps apart. Fix: hands off until 100% dry. If you diffuse, keep the diffuser still rather than moving it around.

6. Too much protein (or too little)

Protein overload makes hair stiff and straw-like; too little makes it mushy and limp. Both frizz. Fix: see protein vs moisture.

7. Humidity — but only if 1–6 aren’t sorted

People blame the weather first. Humidity does make it worse, but hair that’s moisturised, sealed and set in a gel cast handles it far better than hair that went out thirsty.

The 10-minute anti-frizz wash day

  1. Gentle cleanse at the scalp.
  2. Condition; detangle with fingers while it’s on.
  3. Rinse. Don’t towel.
  4. Leave-in, then gel, scrunched upward on soaking hair.
  5. Plop in a T-shirt for 10–20 minutes.
  6. Diffuse on low, or air dry.
  7. Once completely dry, scrunch out the crunch. A drop of oil on your palms helps.

Finding your frizz trigger

Most people have one dominant cause. The fastest way to find yours is to change one thing at a time and watch what happens over a week. Coil makes this easy: every check-in records what you did and how your hair looked, and the AI hair scan scores frizz from a selfie, so after two weeks you can see whether frizz dropped when you switched cleansers, started plopping or changed pillowcases.

Questions people ask

Why is my curly hair so frizzy even after conditioner?

Usually because product is going on hair that’s already partly dry, or because the hair is being touched while it dries. Try applying leave-in and gel to soaking-wet hair and leaving it alone until fully dry.

Does oil stop frizz?

A light oil on dry hair can smooth surface frizz and add shine. It doesn’t add moisture by itself — it seals in what’s already there.

Is frizz a sign of damage?

Not always. Healthy curly hair can frizz. But frizz that never responds to moisture, especially with rough, broken ends, often signals damage that only a trim fixes.
