How to plop curly hair (in 60 seconds, with a T-shirt)
It sounds ridiculous. It looks ridiculous. It’s also one of the cheapest frizz fixes there is.
The short version
- Plopping wraps styled, wet curls in a T-shirt so they dry partly in shape, without friction.
- Leave it 10–30 minutes. Overnight is fine for some, too flat for others.
- Use a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel — never a terry towel.
- Very short hair (under ~3 inches) usually doesn’t need it.
Normal towels have loops that snag the cuticle and rough up curls. Plopping replaces them with something smooth and absorbent, and holds your curls up on top of your head so they don’t stretch out while the excess water is pulled away.
How to plop, step by step
- Apply leave-in and styler to soaking-wet hair, as usual.
- Lay a long-sleeved cotton T-shirt flat on a counter or bed, neck hole towards you.
- Lean forward and lower your hair onto the centre of the shirt so your curls pile up — let them coil naturally.
- Fold the bottom of the shirt (the hem nearest you) over the back of your neck.
- Twist the sleeves or sides, wrap them round to your forehead and tie or tuck them.
- Leave it 10–30 minutes, then unwrap gently and diffuse or air dry. Don’t touch.
Who plopping helps most
| Hair | Plopping? |
|---|---|
| Curly or coily, shoulder length or longer | Yes — biggest benefit |
| Wavy 2A–2B | Short plops only (10 min). Long plops can flatten waves. |
| Very short curls / crops | Not needed — squeeze with a T-shirt instead |
| Thick, slow-drying hair | Yes — cuts drying time noticeably |
Plop, then diffuse
Plopping and diffusing are a strong combination: plop to get rid of drips and set the shape, then diffuse to finish. If you tell Coil you do both, your styling step becomes “Plop, then diffuse” in your daily routine — and if you only plop, it’s “Plop in a tee.”
Wash day
- Co-wash & detanglewash
- Condition & finger-combcondition
- Leave-in while dampcondition
- Plop, then diffusestyle
Questions people ask
How long should you plop curly hair?
Between 10 and 30 minutes for most people. Some plop overnight, but that can flatten roots or wavy hair.
Can you plop without product?
You can, but plopping works best after a leave-in and styler, because the product sets the curl shape as the T-shirt removes water.
Does plopping work for wavy hair?
Sometimes. Wavy hair can get weighed down or flattened by long plops, so keep it short — around 10 minutes.
