Wavy hair routine for 2A, 2B and 2C hair: lighter than you think
Wavy hair gets the least attention of any curl type and gets weighed down the easiest. The rule: less product, more technique.
The short version
- Waves are easily weighed down. Swap creams and butters for foams, mousses and light gels.
- Apply product on soaking-wet hair, then scrunch upward and squeeze out water.
- Use a light conditioner and keep it off the roots.
- Many “straight” people are actually 2A–2B and never knew.
Lots of people with wavy hair spend years thinking their hair is “just messy” or “frizzy straight”. Brushing dry, heavy conditioners and towel rubbing all erase waves. Change those three things and a pattern often appears within a couple of washes.
The routine
- Wash with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. Waves usually need more frequent washing than tighter curls — 2 to 4 times a week.
- Condition mid-lengths to ends only. Detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb in the shower.
- Leave a little conditioner in instead of a separate leave-in, or use a spray leave-in.
- Foam or mousse on soaking-wet hair — head upside-down, scrunch upward.
- Light gel over the top for hold if you need it.
- Squeeze out water with a T-shirt. Short plop (10 min) at most.
- Diffuse or air dry, then scrunch out the crunch.
| Type | Typical products | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| 2A | Mousse or foam only | Creams, oils, heavy leave-ins |
| 2B | Mousse + light gel | Butters, heavy oils |
| 2C | Light cream + gel | Very heavy butters |
Which looks most like your hair?
Mistakes that flatten waves
- Too much product. Start with half of what the bottle says.
- Brushing dry. It turns waves into fluff.
- Long plops or overnight plops. Waves can get squashed.
- Heavy silicones and waxes. 2A–2B hair is usually fine and low-porosity — the most build-up sensitive combination.
Wavy hair changes a lot day to day
Waves are the most temperamental pattern — one humid day and they’re gone. That makes it especially hard to judge a product from a single wash. Coil’s daily check-in and curl score let you compare like with like: same product, a week of results, instead of one good or bad morning.
Questions people ask
How do I make my wavy hair more defined?
Apply mousse or a light gel to soaking-wet hair, scrunch upward with your head upside-down, and don’t touch it until it’s dry. Then scrunch out the gel cast.
Can wavy hair use the curly girl method?
Yes, but many wavy-haired people find the full method too heavy. A lighter “wavy girl” version — mousse instead of creams, lighter conditioners — usually works better.
Why does my wavy hair go straight by the afternoon?
Usually not enough hold, too much weight from heavy products, or humidity. Try a stronger hold gel and lighter moisture products.
