The best curly hair app in 2026: what a good one should actually do

A curly hair app should do more than show you a product list. Here’s the checklist we used when building Coil, so you can judge any app — including ours.

The short version

  • Curly hair is personal: the right app should start from your hair, not a template.
  • It should track outcomes over time — that’s the only way to know which product or habit worked.
  • Ingredient checking saves real money. Most curl mistakes are on the label.
  • If it takes more than a minute a day, you’ll stop using it.

We’re biased — we make Coil. So instead of a top-ten list where we put ourselves at number one, here’s the checklist we wrote before building anything. Use it to judge any curly hair app.

1. It should start with your hair, not a hair type

A “3B routine” is a stereotype. Your hair also has a porosity, a density, a scalp and a history (bleach, colour, keratin). Two 3B heads with different porosity need opposite products. A good app asks about all of it.

How Coil does it: thirteen quick onboarding questions — curl pattern, length, porosity, density, scalp, chemical treatments, wash days, drying habits, goals and trim rhythm. About two minutes.

2. It should give you today’s plan, not a library of articles

You don’t need another blog (yes, we see the irony). You need to know what to do this morning: is it a wash day or a refresh day? Do you deep condition? Diffuse or air dry?

  • Oil the scalp, work it incondition
  • Scrunch & air drystyle
  • Bonnet before bedrest

3. It should measure results

This is where most apps — and most people — fall down. Curls vary day to day for a dozen reasons, so without a record you end up blaming or praising the wrong product. The app should capture how your hair looked and felt, and line it up with what you did.

How Coil does it: a daily check-in of about twenty seconds. Tick what you did, rate how your curls feel, optionally add a selfie. The AI hair scan reads frizz, definition and moisture from the photo, and those become a single curl score — weighted 40% definition, 30% frizz, 30% moisture.

4. It should read ingredient labels for you

Sulfates, drying alcohols, non-soluble silicones and waxes cause most of the classic curl complaints — dryness, build-up, flat roots. Checking every label by hand is tedious. An app should do it in a photo.

Coil goes one step further: it tallies how your curls did on the days you used each product, so the ingredient score is backed by your own results.

5. It should remember the boring stuff

Trims, wash days, deep conditioning. Curly hair rewards consistency, and it’s easy to lose track. Reminders should fit your rhythm, not a generic one.

6. It should take less than a minute a day

Every habit app dies the same way: it asks for too much. If logging takes longer than brushing your teeth, you’ll quit in a week. Coil’s check-in is built to be finished before the kettle boils, and a streak keeps it going.

Who Coil is for

Anyone with wavy, curly or coily hair, at any length. Coil started with men who have short curly cuts and grow-outs — the people most curly advice ignores — and it now fits everyone from a fade to waist-length hair. It is on iPhone; there’s no Android version yet.

What it costs

Coil Pro is $6.99 a week or $99.99 a year (about $1.92 a week) in the US, with three days free for new subscribers. For context, a year of Coil costs about the same as five or six bottles of salon curl cream — and if you’ve ever bought the wrong leave-in twice, you know where that money usually goes.

Questions people ask

Is there a free curly hair app?

There are free apps that offer basic product lists or routine templates. Coil offers a three-day free trial for new subscribers, then a weekly or yearly subscription.

Does Coil work for wavy hair?

Yes. Coil supports wavy (2A–2C), curly (3A–3C) and coily (4A–4C) patterns, and adjusts product weight and steps for each.

Can a curly hair app replace a stylist?

No, and it shouldn’t try. A good stylist cuts and shapes. An app helps with the 99% of days between appointments — and reminds you when the next cut is due.
